In the news: Weather update, bike accident legal tips and funny biking tips
Cyclists ride through, and around, a puddle that covered the American River bike trail next to the Campus Commons Golf Course Thursday evening.
The rain has passed and the weekend weather forecast from the National Weather Service predicts sunny skies and temperatures over 80 degrees for both weekend days. It looks like a good weekend for riding. If you are looking for tips on what to do in the event of a bike accident, check out this blog post by Sacramento injury lawyer and cyclist, Jessica Grigsby. You can find more information on her blog. If, however, you are looking for a laugh, check out this post of biking tips from The Onion. Stick your tongue firmly in your cheek before reading.

Cool GPS mapping illustrations
This is a pretty creative way to get in some bike miles. Baltimore bicyclist Michael J. Wallace has created illustrations using his GPS mapping device and carefully plotted routes. He has made everything from a hammer to a shark to a giant Angry Birds illustration.
“Think of each of these images as being akin to a giant Etch-a-Sketch. Once the recording begins, a continuous line is drawn,” Wallace says on his website.
This video from Slate gives you an idea of some of his work.
Another entertaining post from Bike Snob NYC
The Bike Snob NYC has done it again with a hilarious post titled, “Beauty: It’s All in the Wrist” about everything from folding bikes to Cadel Evan’s head. Consider how he begins the post, “Waking up with the sun yesterday, I ingested an ‘epic’ breakfast burrito the size of Cadel Evans’s head. ‘Which ride will it be today?’ I asked myself as I carved into Cadel’s cleft chin.”
Dachshund in the window
I ran into this dachshund with his head out the window as I crested the top of Foresthill Road in Auburn during a hill-climbing ride on Saturday. The little guy didn’t seem very impressed by my spandex or my helmet cam.

Change a flat in under a minute?
Check out this youtube video of a guy changing a flat in less than a minute. Granted, it’s the front tire, and, he doesn’t inspect it to find the cause of the flat, but it’s still impressive.
How much is that doggie in the window?
Or, better stated, how much is that doggie hanging out of the window?
I happened across this pooch hanging out of the window of a red Ford Mustang this morning as I headed toward the bike trail in below-freezing temperatures. He didn’t seem very impressed by my cold-weather spandex attire.

I am no foodie
So, what kind of food do you like when you ride? None of those energy bars or sports gels for me. I’m into sugar, salt, fat and grease. The only criteria for eating this stuff is riding more than 60 miles.
Here’s a look back at some of my cycling food of the last year starting with a “Squeeze with Cheese” from the Squeeze Inn on Harbor Blvd. in West Sac. A couple of my favorites featured in the gallery are the breakfast burrito (with bacon, of course) from Montoya’s stand at the Davis Farmers Market and pastries and coffee at the Bakerie & Latte Chateau Arme at 2222 Francisco Dr in El Dorado Hills.
Now that’s a lot of porta-potties
Tomorrow is the California International Marathon. My ride today went past the location of the start of the race on Auburn-Folsom Road. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen so many porta-potties.
Sure enough, when I checked later, the CIM folks boast about the porta-potty numbers on their website. It’s their no. 21 reason why to run the marathon.
Good luck to all who are running tomorrow.

Sea Lion heads south on the Sacramento River
On this morning’s ride to Davis we were treated to the view of a couple Sea Lions cavorting in the Sacramento River. One was feasting on a Salmon (unfortunately I wasn’t fast enough to capture that with my camera) and the other was headed south, swimming fast toward the Delta. I was able to get a quick shot of him surfacing for air just north of the water intake station near Old Sac.

Skateboarding couple
I saw this young couple skateboarding together as I rode home on my evening commute on Wednesday.

Bicycling with Arnold Schwarzenegger
In a Vanity Fair article, Contributing Editor Michael Lewis writes in a piece titled, “California and Bust,” a hilarious description of riding bikes with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Dog and skateboard
Saw this dog getting his daily exercise pulling a guy on a skateboard at I and 21 streets.
Dog on a leash keeps up with bike
This is one of my first helmet cam video clips. I saw this guy “walking” his dog while riding a bike on 34th Street late in the afternoon on July 20.
